  • REAL MEN DO SING!    Next class will be announced when it is booked. Pre-registration is necessary.
A fun singing workshop for men: those who have been in a choir and those who have not.  For any man who wants to sing!

With  Denis Donnelly.
Denis is co-director of the very successful Gettin’ Higher Choir in Victoria; director of Soundings, an auditioned group of 26 singers in Victoria; and a very popular singing workshop facilitator!

St Philip’s Anglican Church, 7113 Lantzville Rd, Lantzville, BC - All the music will be taught by ear, so no music-reading abilities are necessary, nor any previous experience singing in a group setting.

Fee: $40.

- An opportunity for men to explore their singing voices in a safe and supportive setting.

- Fun with some repertoire that suits men’s voices: sea chanteys to Zulu chants to Gospel to Beach Boys.

- The range of songs will be a wide variety from the rich genres of music that men have been singing together for thousands of years: songs for working together, drinking together, telling stories together, marching together, praising together, being devotional together, and of course just having fun!

- The focus will not be on “choral” singing, where the emphasis is on the mainstream choral repertoire, rather on the experience of singing “men’s songs” in harmony. It will be designed to be a good experience for all who attend.

- There will be bit of focus on basic vocal technique and breathing.

- All that is required is a desire to experience something new, rich, and fun!

So if you think this would be fun and something that you’d like to do, come on along! If you know of any men who you think might enjoy such and opportunity, please let them know about this workshop!

COMMENTS from a workshop attendee:

‘On Saturday I attended a “Real Men Do Sing” workshop. Sang all manly songs, and had a man for a teacher. For lunch they served salami, pepperoni, bagels, cheese dip, potato crisps, and dessert(s). Nothing green was served. We all et lots. Red Green wooda loved it. The perfect lunch for men who, were it not for this workshop, would’ve been home eating the very same food whilst watching sports on TV! Only thing missing was the flat of beer in the cooler! Instead, the ladies provided us with…bottled water. :o . After it was over The Men repaired to the pub next door.’

Want to sing? Scared to sing? Told you can’t sing? Too embarrassed to sing?Following a very successful first course, we offer a second course for anyone who would like to sing with a group, but think they can’t.

So You Think You Can’t Sing? is a 6 week (12 hour) course which will help you to overcome your inhibitions and learn to sing in tune in a comfortable range so that you can relax and confidently participate in choral activities with others.

This workshop is for anyone who says “I can’t sing” and would like to sing in a group. We will coach you to love your voice, experiment with sounds and teach you easy-to-learn songs. Lots of fun, laughter and total acceptance. Singing is a simple physical activity.

Anyone who possesses the necessary body parts can play the game. Like throwing a ball, your singing muscles and reflexes can always be strengthened and coordinated to improve range and accuracy.

Even though it may feel intimidating at first, group singing is a great way to learn to sing. The support of others around you helps you to explore your voice where you will not be heard alone as in a solo situation.

Learning to sing in a group is not just about music; it is a life-affirming experience, giving you confidence to interact with others and have fun at the same time. It can also improve your self esteem, boost your immune system and just feels good! Using a body-centered approach you and the other participants will be coached in fun listening, breathing, movement and vocal activities that will develop your own authentic singing voice.

If you really want to learn to sing you can do it. Passion and dedication to the process is all that is needed. We provide an enjoyable atmosphere of support and encouragement where you can relax and find your own voice. There will be no solo singing!
